Local Public Pool Hours

Here are a listing of the pools in Tampa Bay area. These pools are staffed with lifeguards. Most of the pools are free to public and some have specific lap swim hours. Most pools are opened on holidays but be sure to call ahead of time to find out about holiday hours which is usually different from normal operating hours. Sometimes pools may be rented for events or meets and may not be available for public swim. It is always a good idea to call the pool before making the drive. Pools also provide swimming equipment such as aqua jogging belts and dump bells, kick boards, pull buoys and swim fins. If you use fins quite a bit, we suggest that you bring your own since you may not be able to find a matching pair of your size.

Updates on city of Tampa pools

Due to budget cut, all city of Tampa pools will start charging swimmers who wish to use the facilities starting October 1, 2009. They do not have the exact date when the charge will take effect so check back here as we will post updated information as it becomes available. City of Tampa residents and non-city residents will be charged different rates:

For the remainder of 2009, city of Tampa residents will need to purchase a recreation card at $15 which will allow them to use all city parks and recreational facilties, including any city of Tampa pool. Proof of city residency is required. For non-city residents, they will need to purchase a recreation card at $115 per year (good for 12 months from date of purchase).

Starting Jan 1, 2010, city of Tampa residents will need to pay $25 per season (each season has 15 weeks). Non-city residents will need a recreation card which they have either purchased in 2009 or purchase one during 2010, plus a $50 per season fee (we were told this amount is not definite yet). Alternatively, both city and non-city residents have the option of paying $4 per use.

As mentioned, the city of Tampa is in the process of finalizing the policy and therefore effective date and amounts to be charged could change. Please check back often for updates.

Masters Swim Clubs in Tampa Bay

Masters swimming in the United States is structured under the United States Masters Swimming (USMS). Masters swimming is an organized program of swimming for adults at or over the age of 18. Members participate in a variety of ways ranging from lap swimming to international competition. USMS has over 40,000 members and over 450 local Masters Swim Clubs throughout the country and more are forming every day. USMS provides the administrative structure for Masters swimming. The country is divided into smaller groups called Local Masters Swimming Committees (LMSC). LMSC's in turn are composed of smaller groups (clubs or teams and unaffiliated swimmers).

As an individual, you may choose to join a team or club and enjoy the camaraderie and structure of the group or you may choose to remain unattached. Unattached swimmers enjoy all of the benefits of USMS membership, except they cannot compete on relays. When you join, you're automatically covered by the group's insurance which provides accident and liability insurance during all sanctioned events and organized workouts. An annual membership in USMS is obtained for a modest fee through Local Masters Swimming Committee and includes insurance benefits and USMS SWIMMER magazine. LMSC's have their own minimal membership fees to cover their administrative and organizational expenses. In addition, clubs or teams can have their own membership fees to pay for pools, coaching, administrative, social and other costs.

It is strongly suggested that you call the club's contact to verify location and practice times and that practices are taking place since they could change depending upon availability of the pools.
